Major: Mechanical Engineering
United Kingdom
Year 2012-2013

Studying abroad in the UK was a life-changing experience.  For the first time living on my own, it was much more than I could ask for.  I'll never forget the people I met, the places I got to see, and the crazy experiences I had. From walking around in the freezing weather of Stockholm, to wandering around the small medieval village of Castle Combe, to walking up hilly Bristol to admire its multi-colored buildings, I wouldn't hesitate to I'd do it all again! I'd definitely encourage all students to go abroad, regardless of major.

"Studying abroad for the summer was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I had a great time traveling throughout England and Scotland as well as Europe while meeting a lot of wonderful people; well worth it for a reasonable price. I also completed my breadth classes at a great university in two 4 week classes. I definitely recommend studying abroad and traveling, it's a great opportunity and you should take advantage of it."

It is impossible to write my experiences over a year in 2-3 sentences. One thing is for sure, I met some of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life and I shall never forget them. Even though I went through the I-want-to-go-home stage, this was one of the best experiences of my life.

Being in a foreign country and immersing myself into a completely different culture was a challenging and eye-opening expereince. I guess in essence I learned how to wonder. I wondered at huge buildings and works made hundreds and thousands of years ago, I wondered at paying to go to the bathroom, I wondered at living so close to the countryside, I wondered at blackberries growing at the side of the road, I wondered at new friendships and potlucks, I wondered at amazing accents, I wondered at huge birds, and I wondered at extraordinary generosity. We are all different there is no doubt but different does not mean bad, because sometimes different can be better.

Major: Electrical Engineering
Minor: Studio Art
YSEP Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan
Year 2005-2006

"Japan is really a worthwhile experience. There is no doubt in my mind that their Euro-American Japanese mixed modern country has developed into a beautiful country the last few centuries and I was lucky to catch a glimpse of it.
During my year long studies at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, there were three major courses that I felt were utmost valuable and unique while studying abroad. One was taking a class from a world-renown robotic professor/inventor, two was going aboard several popular company study tours such as Sharp and Ajinomoto, three was preparing myself for a research conference held in Osaka. The hands-on insight allowed me to gain perspective on how a technologically advanced country, like Japan, functions in their Academia and working society. A light bulb thought that still strikes my brain is: research can be done for the sole purpose of public amusement. And, it is perfectly legitimate for an university to support that development. Wow, when will there ever be a time where my home university will fund or support my research for toys?"
