Anteaters Explore the World while the University of California Education Abroad Program Celebrates 50 Years of Global Learning

In the fall of 1962, 80 students from the University of California traveled to Bordeaux, France to spend a year studying abroad.  When UCI opened in 1965 Anteaters began joining their fellow UC students abroad.  In the early years UCI students studied in locations as diverse as Hong Kong, Kenya, Lebanon and Mexico as well as locations such as England, France and Spain. Today UCI students flock to England, France, Italy, Japan, Korea and Spain, while a handful of students take the road less traveled, exploring diverse countries such as India, Senegal and Vietnam. Craig Raynsford: I was fortunate to have participated in the EAP program in 1975-76, studying at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. This experience did have a profound effect on my life. I have remained close friends with one of the other EAP students for 30 years, the experience solidified my interest in pursuing a career in the area of international law, and my wife and I recently took our daughters to Kenya to retrace my earlier safaris in East Africa. It is fair to say that none of these events would have transpired had it not been for my participation in EAP. Read more...

Hear from students about UCI's Global Leadership Certificate Program (GLCP), which helps connect their study abroad experience to leadership development and positive global impact.

Roy Chan: After going through the GLCP, I have recognized that global leadership is essential to move our ever changing society to a higher degree of consciousness, specifically liberty, freedom, justice, and self-actualization. I believe the GLCP is an important addition to UCI because the program has taught me, as well as the other participants, the idea of being a ‘transformative leader.’ Read more...
